DIRECTIONAL MARKINGS

Last updated: 9 Oct 2015

This section lists and illustrates directional markings found on the stamps, postal stationery cards (not yet seen) and covers of British Malaya. Directional markings are straight-line names of ports usually applied to facilitate the directing of mail addressed in a language other than English.

I have no intent to have this be a complete listing of all known marks but instead it will show a selection of directional markings.

Charles A. Jones published the results of a recent census of 37 directional marking found on items from Hong Kong and Treaty Ports (27), the Straits Settlements (9) and North Borneo (1). See his article on the website of the Hong Kong Study Circle here.

I welcome your additions and comments on the subject contact me here.

The items illustrated below are mostly from my collection. They are grouped under the following headings: Singapore, Penang, Malacca, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Siam, Semarang, & Unidentified.
