EE THYE / PENANG

I believe the likeliest name is E THYE. This was the chop for a firm operated by the Lim family of Singapore. Lim Lan operated as a merchant and commission agent in Boat Quay and by 1869 had branches in Palembang and Sarawak. His son, Lim Eng Leng, became a Municipal Commissioner in 1888-9 and was a considerable man and ran ship chandlery. His son, in turn, Lee Chin Swee, with partners, was part of Seet Guan Swee, which used the chop E Thye. In 1879 this firm dissolved and reconstituted itself as Lee Chin Swee, still using the cop E Thye. [John Wilson May 16, 2006]
