The 67 Inbound Covers are now in chronological order.

Items added: 10 May 2026

The only indication as to the volume of mail handled by the British Post Office at the Consulate is from the summary of the meeting to discuss temporary postal arrangements held on 5 February 1885. The data presented by the postmaster indicates that in the year 1884, about 11,000 letters were dispatched plus 2,500 newspapers. As for incoming mail there were approximately 12,500 letters and 16,200 newspapers.

Here I document covers inbound to Bangkok between 1855 and 1885. In my book I have not done so. My only explanation is that most collectors and those that exhibit the British Consulate Post Office have concentrated on the outgoing mail.

Items are listed in the table below are by the date of mailing. Each item is given a number. Clicking on an item's number in the left column will jump to its image below.

Any receiving marks mentioned by the source are noted in an attempt to study several questions:
  • Some maintained that the Bangkok CDS (1883 to 1885) found on some Straits Settlements and Hong Kong issues was applied on uncancelled stamps that arrived at the post office. Is there any evidence to support this?
  • Mail for Bangkok coming through London was to be sent in a sealed bag for deliver to Bangkok. Can a study of these covers prove that?
  • How else did mail arrive at Bangkok?

Interestingly, not a single cover below has a BANGKOK CDS applied as a receiving mark!

There are multiple covers related to the following.

Todd, Findlay & Co.

The 'Todd, Finlay & Co' of Rangoon, Burma was established by two Scotsmen, James Todd, and Thomas Findlay. They were the managers and were operating the Burma Steam Tug Co.

In May 1864 'Todd, Finlay & Co' purchased the assets, vessels and goodwill of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company for £16,200. The fleet originally consisted of four steamers and four flats (as barges were known in south Asia). The business had been managed by 'P Henderson & Company' from Glasgow. 22 August 1878

Francis Herb is recorded as being part of the French company Alloin & Co. in Bangkok as early as 1874.
By 1876, he is associated with Alloin & Lamache. In 1882, he becomes a partner at Lamache & Co.
He is not listed in the 1888 directory. [Source: Various Directories.]

The letter was sent by the French wine merchant Moreau.

“In 1814 Jean-Joseph Moreau, a young cooper, married a local winemaker’s daughter and inherited the oldest wine House of Chablis.
Driven by passion for the vine and traditional values, he successfully ran the business and quickly became one of the most important producers of wine in Chablis.
He was a pioneer in the region and his success continued to rise.
Over the years, J. Moreau & Fils established itself on the international market and became a prestigious House, successful worldwide.”

Note 1:
Rev. and Mrs. Chalmus Martin joined the Laos Mission located at Chiangmai at the end of 1883. They had to leave in 1886 because of a life threatening illness to him. These covers must have been among the last to travel via the Bangkok route. Lalance & Grosjean were important manufacturers of porcelain covered iron cookware. In April 1884, a British consul was appointed to Chiangmai. Mail was then routed via Moulmein, Burma instead of the uncertain Bangkok route. It took six weeks to four months to go from Bangkok to Chiangmai, depending on the water level of the river.

Chiangmal was the major center of the Kingdom of Chiangmai in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Kingdom was one of the successors of medieval Lanna Kingdom that had been under Burmese rule for two centuries until it was captured by Siamese forces under Taksin of Thonburi in 1774. Inthawichayanon (1871-1884) was the last King of Chiangmai when it was annexed by Siam in 1884. These two covers actually arrived while the Kingdom of Chiangmai was still independent.

Note 2: Le Comte de Kergaradec (1 Jan 1841 - 1894) studied engineering at the Naval School. He was promoted to Captain of frigate on 13 April 1883.
In May 1875 he was placed in charge of the French consulate in Hanoi as the principal administrator of native affairs and was sent on a mission to Hué in April 1883.

On 5 July 1883 he was appointed Consul and Government Commissioner at Bangkok. Then on 5 August 1887 he was appointed Chargé d’Affaires and Consul General to Siam. On 5 January 1891 he was appointed the Consul General of France in Moscow.

He died suddenly on 2 October 1894 at age 53 in Berlin where he was passing through.

He was one of the most distinguished officers of the French consular service. He was made a count in December 1865. In September 1877 he was made an officer of the Legion of Honor.
