The
only indication as to the volume of mail handled by the British Post Office at the Consulate is from the summary of the
meeting to discuss temporary postal arrangements held on 5 February
1885. The data presented by the postmaster indicates that in the year 1884,
about 11,000 letters were dispatched plus 2,500 newspapers. As for
incoming mail there were approximately 12,500 letters and 16,200
newspapers. Here
I document covers inbound to Bangkok between 1855 and 1885.
In my book I have not done so. My only explanation is that
most collectors and those that exhibit the British Consulate
Post Office have concentrated on the outgoing mail. Items
are listed in the table below are by the date of
mailing. Each item is given a number. Clicking on an item's
number in the left column will jump to its image below. Any receiving marks mentioned by the source are noted in an attempt to study several questions:
Interestingly, not a single cover below has a BANGKOK CDS applied as a receiving mark! |
There are multiple covers related to the following. Click 'Note' to jump to the biography. Note 1: Rev. and Mrs. Chalmus Martin Note 2: Le Comte de Kergaradec Note 3: Émile Knecht Note 4: Cama family Note 5: Grassi |

originally consisted of four steamers and four flats (as barges were known in
south Asia). The business had been managed by 'P Henderson & Company' from
Glasgow. (See Irrawaddy Flotilla Company for more information) |

Chiangmal was the major center of the Kingdom of Chiangmai in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Kingdom was one of the successors of medieval Lanna Kingdom that had been under Burmese rule for two centuries until it was captured by Siamese forces under Taksin of Thonburi in 1774. Inthawichayanon (1871-1884) was the last King of Chiangmai when it was annexed by Siam in 1884. These two covers actually arrived while the Kingdom of Chiangmai was still independent.
